Newcastle’s Flood Control Room

Once again the North East has seen torrential rain…On Sunday flash flooding closed the Swing Bridge across the Tyne, several metro stations and standing water up to 2 feet deep closed roads such as the Coast Road and the Central Motorway.

Then on Monday we were once again on amber flood alert. So how does the city deal with these episodes as they begin?

Well it all happens in Newcastle City Council‘s Flood Room in Sandyford in Newcastle – I’ve been for a guided tour with Manager Peter Gray:

So a very busy day there in Newastle’s Flood hub, where calls are taken from worried residents watching the water rise at their front doors.
