Fancy running a lighthouse? St Mary’s Island and Lighthouse in Whitley Bay is currently being run by North Tyneside Council but for the next five years it is to be run by a private company.
It’s all part of plans to save the council money. The council is looking for a private provider who would rent the Island and Visitor Centre from the council.
I’ve been finding out what the job involves:
The proposals were agreed as part of the council’s last budget and it’s Cabinet was asked to give the go ahead for a new provider at a meeting of the Cabinet.
Three South Tyneside councillors and an official complained they were libelled in a blog called “Mr Monkey” [1] . The blog made accusations against XXX (sorry this part is censored so as not to repeat the libel.)
The council’s current investment and regeneration programme has set four priorities: investment along the coastal zone, from St Mary’s lighthouse to North Shields Fish Quay; the North Bank of the Tyne to build on successful marine industries, deliver a ‘multiversity’ and deliver a regeneration masterplan for Wallsend towncentre; the A19 corridor and the borough’s retail centres.
How exciting! I hope that it’s a great success for the buyer. Glad to hear some good economic news for a change.
