Drivers in Newcastle who wait in box junctions, or use bus or cycle lanes look out. Newcastle City Council wants more powers to control traffic in the city.
At the moment, it’s the job of the police, but Newcastle, along with other big cities in England like Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester, think they have the resources to do it more effectively.
I’ve been finding out what it would mean for roads in Newcastle:
Newcastle is governed using the leader and cabinet system, and the executive is Labour , as they have 51 councillors against the Liberal Democrat’s 26. No other parties hold seats on the city’s council, however there is 1 independent Councillor.
